La gare de Hattingen est une gare située dans la ville de Hattingen. Elle comprend également l'arrêt Hattingen Mitte. Ce dernier est cependant le point d'accès le plus important au transport ferroviaire de proximité, car la vieille ville de Hattingen et la gare routière se trouvent juste à proximité.
La gare se trouve sur le tronçon Dahlhausen – Henrichshütte de la ligne Mittleren Ruhrtalbahn, inaugurée le 28 décembre 1869, qui a été construite par la Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. En 1874, la ligne a été prolongée de la Henrichshütte à Hagen. En 1884, la ligne bifurquant vers Wuppertal a été mise en service.
