Le château de Sternberg est situé dans le district de Lippe en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, à la frontière ouest de la commune d'Extertal avec la commune de Dörentrup. Le propriétaire du château fort est l'association régionale de Lippe.
Le château fort se trouve à une altitude de 315 mètres sur un promontoire du Dörenberg. Il offre une vue sur le pays de Lippe jusqu'à la forêt de Teutobourg.
