Le port est situé à la bordure ouest de Wesel entre les kilomètres rhénans 814,50 et 815,90. Deux kilomètres plus au sud - à l'entrée du canal Wesel-Datteln dans le Rhin - se trouve le port Rhein-Lippe de Wesel. La Lippe se jette dans le Rhin parallèlement au bassin du port.
Déjà en 1355, il est documenté qu'un commerce était exercé sur la Lippe à Wesel à l'aide d'un bateau grue. En 1407, Wesel a été érigé en ville hanséatique et dans la foulée, un nouveau bateau grue a été installé sur la rive du Rhin. Le premier bassin portuaire sur le Rhin a été achevé en 1650, un nouveau port de sécurité en 1896 finalement. L'ancien bassin portuaire a été comblé en 1927.
