En 1894, plusieurs exploitants individuels ont regroupé leur possession de champs sous la limite de la ville entre Bottrop et Gladbeck et ont fondé le syndicat Vereinigte Gladbeck.
Celui-ci a commencé en 1895 à Rentfort avec le creusement de l'installation à double puits Thyssen et en 1897 à Bottrop-Eigen avec l'installation à double puits Professor. Comme le syndicat avait regroupé les deux champs sous le nom de Zeche Vereinigte Gladbeck, les puits Professor ont également été marqués avec la numérotation de puits 3/4. Cela a été maintenu tout au long de la durée de vie de la mine.
