Wettelroda a été mentionnée pour la première fois par écrit entre 830 et 850. Depuis le 28 avril 2016, le chef de village est Tim Schultze. Jusqu'en 2005, Wettelrode était une commune politiquement autonome. Le 1er octobre 2005, elle a été intégrée à Sangerhausen.
À l'extrémité ouest de l'ancien village minier se trouve le Röhrigschacht, où l'on extrayait autrefois de la schiste cuprifère. À l'époque de la RDA, il servait de puits d'aération pour le puits Thomas-Müntzer. C'est le seul musée minier avec un propre chemin de fer en Saxe-Anhalt.
