La station de radio côtière de Borkum a été la première station de radio côtière en Allemagne. À l'initiative du Norddeutscher Lloyd, le phare électrique de Borkum et le bateau-phare Borkumriff, situé à environ 30 kilomètres au nord-ouest de l'île, ont été équipés d'installations Marconi pour la télégraphie sans fil, afin de signaler plus précisément les arrivées des navires dans les ports de destination. Le bateau-phare Borkumriff signalait sans fil les navires du Lloyd aperçus au phare de Borkum, à partir duquel le message était ensuite télégraphié par câble à Bremerhaven. La station de radio côtière a été mise en service le 15 mai 1900.
