La estación de radio costera de Borkum fue la primera estación de radio costera en Alemania. A iniciativa del Lloyd Norddeutscher, el faro eléctrico en Borkum y el barco de fuego Borkumriff, que se encuentra a unas 30 kilómetros al noroeste de la isla, se equiparon con instalaciones Marconi para la telegrafía inalámbrica, con el fin de informar con mayor precisión sobre las llegadas de barcos a los puertos de destino. El barco de fuego Borkumriff informaba de los barcos del Lloyd avistados de manera inalámbrica al faro de Borkum, desde donde el mensaje se telegrafiaba luego por cable a Bremerhaven. La estación de radio costera entró en funcionamiento el 15 de mayo de 1900.
