Het kustradiostation Borkum was het eerste kustradiostation in Duitsland. Op initiatief van de Noord-Duitse Lloyd werden de elektrische vuurtoren op Borkum en het lichtschip Borkumriff, ongeveer 30 kilometer ten noordwesten van het eiland gelegen, uitgerust met Marconi-systemen voor draadloze telegrafie om de aankomst van schepen in de bestemmingshavens nauwkeuriger te kunnen melden. Het lichtschip Borkumriff meldde de waargenomen Lloyd-schepen draadloos aan de vuurtoren op Borkum, vanwaar het bericht vervolgens per kabel naar Bremerhaven werd getelegrafeerd. Het kustradiostation werd op 15 mei 1900 in gebruik genomen.
