La Papenkaule est le cratère sec créé par une explosion phréatique il y a environ 10 000 ans dans le dolomite de la Munterley, qui fait partie du bassin calcaire de Gerolstein, au nord de Gerolstein/Eifel.
La lave libérée après l'explosion n'a cependant pas coulé par le conduit de la Papenkaule, mais est apparue à l'ouest, dans la Hagelskaule, et s'est écoulée vers le sud sous la forme d'un flot de lave de Sarresdorf jusqu'à la vallée de la Kyll. Comme le dolomite sous la Papenkaule est perméable à l'eau, aucun lac de cratère ne s'est formé.
