De Papenkaule is de droge krater die een phreatische explosie ongeveer 10.000 jaar geleden in de tot de Gerolsteiner Kalkmulde behorende dolomiet van de Munterley ten noorden van Gerolstein/Eifel heeft veroorzaakt.
De lava die na de explosie vrijkwam, stroomde echter niet uit de schacht van de Papenkaule, maar kwam westelijk daarvan in de Hagelskaule aan de oppervlakte en stroomde zuidwaarts als Sarresdorfer lavastroom tot in het Kylltal. Aangezien de dolomiet in de ondergrond van de Papenkaule waterdoorlatend is, ontstond er geen kratermeer.
