La fontaine du marché se trouve sur la place du marché de Mannheim. Elle a été créée à l'origine en 1719 par Peter van den Branden pour le jardin du château de Heidelberg et a été remodelée en 1769 par son fils Johann Matthäus van den Branden.
Carl Philipp était devenu électeur du Palatinat en 1716. Il a planifié l'aménagement du jardin du château de Heidelberg et a chargé Peter van den Branden, un élève de Gabriel Grupello, de réaliser la sculpture. Les figures symbolisaient les quatre éléments : un dieu de l'eau pour l'eau, une figure féminine pour la terre et le messager des dieux Mercure pour l'air, tenant le soleil dans sa main pour le feu. En 1719, le monument était achevé, mais déjà l'année suivante, Carl Philipp déplaçait la résidence de Heidelberg à Mannheim.
