The marketplace fountain stands in the Mannheim marketplace. It was originally created in 1719 by Peter van den Branden for the Heidelberg Castle Garden and redesigned in 1769 by his son Johann Matthäus van den Branden.
Carl Philipp had become Elector Palatine in 1716. He planned the design of the Heidelberg Castle Garden and commissioned Peter van den Branden, a pupil of Gabriel Grupello, for the sculpture. The figures symbolized the four elements: a water god for water, a female figure for earth, and the messenger god Mercury for air, holding the sun in his hand for fire. The monument was completed in 1719, but already the following year, Carl Philipp moved the residence from Heidelberg to Mannheim.
