Le Niederhaus est un château qui se dresse à Passau, au sommet du promontoire rocheux au confluent de l’Ilz et du Danube, en dessous de la Veste Oberhaus. Le promontoire, comme l’Ilzufer droit au nord de celui-ci, appartient au quartier Bschütt du district d’Altstadt.
On estime que les premiers bâtiments sur le promontoire datent de 737. Il s’agissait d’une résidence temporaire que le duc Odilo de Bavière avait attribuée à l’évêque Vivilo avec des religieuses réfugiées.
