Il s’étend dans une vallée du Taubenberg d’ouest en est et divise la montagne en ses parties nord et sud. Le Farnbach prend sa source au Saugräben et absorbe encore l’eau de la source du Nüchternbrunn. Près de Fentbach, il se jette dans la Steinbach.
La zone source du Saugräben est l’une des zones les plus précieuses sur le plan écologique de la région FFH de Taubenberg. Les communautés végétales Haimsimsen-Tannenwald et Rundblattbedkraut-Tannenwald y prédominent, qui se caractérisent par une proportion particulièrement élevée de sapins argentés dans la population d’arbres par rapport aux tourbières calcaires printanières. La cigogne noire et le grand tétras se reproduisent dans la région.
