Le village de 349 habitants est situé dans la vallée de Gartetal sur l’ancienne route commerciale entre Göttingen et Duderstadt, à environ huit kilomètres au sud-ouest de l’ancienne ville. La construction de l’église à colombages du village a commencé en 1779. La communauté dispose d’un service de pompiers volontaires primé. Les organisations communautaires comprennent un club de personnes âgées.
Benniehausen et ses environs sont habités depuis le Paléolithique. Dans la ville voisine de Niedeck, il y a les ruines d’un ancien fort, qui a été fouillé dans les années 1990
