La Zimmerbach prend naissance à Zimmern, un quartier de Bad Langensalza, par la confluence du Zimmertalsgraben et de l'Orbach. Les deux prennent source près du chemin des cimes dans le parc national de Hainich.
À l'est de Zimmern, sur la B 84, la Zimmerbach reçoit l'Hellerbach. Celui-ci transporte souvent peu ou pas d'eau en été. À l'usine d'eau municipale, la Zimmerbach se jette dans la Salza qui prend sa source dans la source karstique Golke. Cette dernière adopte la direction du flux de la Zimmerbach.
