Le Kalksee est un plan d’eau intérieur situé dans le district d’Ostprignitz-Ruppin, au nord-ouest de l’État de Brandebourg. Le lac calcaire mesure 1,4 km de long et environ 700 m de large, sa surface est de 55 ha. Le lac n’a pas d’affluents, au sud-est, il est drainé par le Binenbach jusqu’au Tornowsee.
Le lac fait partie de la réserve naturelle de Ruppiner Schweiz et de la Ruppiner Seenrinne, qui émerge de la
Kalksee, le Tornowsee, Zermützelsee, Tetzensee, Molchowsee et Rhin. La chaîne de lacs s’étend sur environ 40 kilomètres au sud jusqu’à la partie supérieure de la Rhinluche.
