Hasserode est située au pied des Monts Harz dans la vallée de la Holtemme, qui forme en amont la Renne de Pierre. Le village est traversé par la route nationale menant à Drei Annen Hohne et Schierke en direction du Brocken ainsi que par le chemin de fer transharz avec les stations Hasseröder de Wernigerode Hochschule Harz et Wernigerode-Hasserode.
Le village s'est développé autour du château de Hasserode au 12ème siècle, était presque désert au 16ème siècle et a été repeuplé en 1768 sur ordre du roi prussien Frédéric II, d'où le nom de Friedrichsthal pour la partie inférieure du village et le nom temporaire de Hasserode-Friedrichsthal. Le 1er avril 1907, la commune rurale de Hasserode a été incorporée à la ville de Wernigerode.
