Hasserode ligt aan de voet van de Harz in het dal van de Holtemme, die in het bovenloop de Steinerne Renne vormt. Door het dorp loopt de hoofdweg naar Drei Annen Hohne en Schierke in de richting van de Brocken, evenals de Harzquerbahn met de Hasseröder stations Wernigerode Hochschule Harz en Wernigerode-Hasserode.
Het dorp is ontstaan rond het kasteel Hasserode in de 12e eeuw, was in de 16e eeuw vrijwel woest en werd in 1768 op bevel van de Pruisische koning Frederik II. herbevolkt, vandaar ook de naam Friedrichsthal voor het lagere deel van het dorp en de tijdelijke dorpsnaam Hasserode-Friedrichsthal. Op 1 april 1907 vond de samenvoeging van de landgemeente Hasserode met de stad Wernigerode plaats.
