Barmen est un arrondissement de Wuppertal, en Allemagne. Jusqu’en 1929, Barmen était une ville indépendante. Au moment de son unification dans la nouvelle ville de Wuppertal de Barmen, Elberfeld et d’autres communes, Barmen comptait 191 000 habitants.
La plus ancienne mention du nom de Barmen remonte à un acte de 1070. Au début du 18ème siècle, Barmen comptait 2000 habitants. Au 19ème siècle, Barmen a prospéré en tant que ville textile comme le Manchester de l’Allemagne. De plus, l’entreprise Bayer y a été fondée en 1863.
