Barmen è uno dei dieci quartieri di Wuppertal. Una volta formava insieme agli attuali quartieri di Heckinghausen, Oberbarmen e parti di Langerfeld-Beyenburg la grande città di Barmen, che nel 1929 si unì a Elberfeld e ad alcune altre città e comuni per formare l'attuale Wuppertal.
La superficie del quartiere di Barmen corrisponde al vecchio nucleo urbano occidentale di Barmen, "Gemarke" e alla periferia occidentale, che è conosciuta come "Unterbarmen". Il quartiere sul Sedansberg è in gran parte sorto all'inizio del XX secolo come città operaia settentrionale. A sud, l'area si estende fino al Lichtscheid, che con i suoi 350 m è l'innalzamento più alto di Wuppertal e prima del 1929 apparteneva a Ronsdorf.
