Barmen is one of the ten districts of Wuppertal. It used to form, along with the present districts of Heckinghausen, Oberbarmen, and parts of Langerfeld-Beyenburg, the large city of Barmen, which was merged with Elberfeld and several other towns and municipalities into present-day Wuppertal in 1929.
The area of the Barmen district corresponds to the old western town center of Barmen, known as "Gemarke," and the western suburb, referred to as "Unterbarmen." The neighborhood on Sedansberg largely developed at the beginning of the 20th century as a northern working-class suburb. To the south, the area extends to Lichtscheid, which at 350 meters is the highest elevation in Wuppertal and belonged to Ronsdorf before 1929.
