Gahlen est un quartier de la commune de Schermbeck, située dans le Bas-Rhin, dans le district de Wesel, avec environ 2200 habitants. Le territoire comprend les villages de Besten, Bruch et Heisterkamp.
La première mention connue de Gahlen sous le nom de « Ganlingas » se trouve dans le registre des biens de l'abbaye d'Echternach. Elle date de l'année 787. Le nom de lieu actuel Gahlen provient de la décomposition de ce mystérieux nom latin. Dans le document écrit, un scribe moselfranconien parle de la nomination d'un administrateur nommé Wundo « in pago Gesterean super fluvio Lippia in villa Ganlingas ».
