Niederprüm se situe dans la vallée de la Prüm. La B 410 traverse le village. Au nord du village se trouve le centre-ville de Prüm, à l'est se trouve Rommersheim, au sud Ellwerath et à l'ouest Weinsfeld et Watzerath.
Niederprüm a été mentionné pour la première fois dans des documents en date du 13 août 762. Ce document mentionne la donation du domaine de Niederprüm par Pépin au monastère de Prüm. En 1190, le monastère de bénédictines a été fondé, qui a été dissous en 1809.
