Le territoire de la ville s'étend sur 5,5 km2 au centre de la commune homonyme. Elle est située à 50 km au sud-est de Tartu. Elle est arrosée par l'Orajõgi qui à cet endroit forme un lac.En octobre 2013, la ville fusionne avec la commune rurale de Põlva . En octobre 2017, elle absorbe les communes de Ahja, Laheda, Mooste et Vastse-Kuuste.
