Talarn est une ville et une commune du canton de Pallars Jussà. La ville de Talarn était l'ancienne capitale du canton de Pallars Jussà, un statut qu'elle a perdu au profit de Tremp à la fin du Moyen Âge. Son territoire municipal est au centre, incliné vers l'ouest, du canton, à l'endroit le mieux desservi de toute la région. La ville, cependant, en raison de sa position légèrement éloignée des voies de communication, en reste un peu à l'écart, bien qu'elle soit très proche, tant des voies de communication que de Tremp elle-même.
