Le Benacantil est une montagne qui se distingue dans la façade urbaine d'Alicante. Le toponyme est d'origine arabe Banu-lQatil, nom attribué par le géographe musulman al-Idrisi au XIIe siècle. Dans sa forme native, ce serait Bena'Laqantil, qui dérive des mots bena, forme mozarabe de pinna, 'falaise' en latin, et de laqanti, adjectif provenant de Laqant, le nom arabe de la ville, duquel provient également le nom d'Alicante en valencien. Il y aurait une évolution phonétique qui élide l'élision intervocalique pour devenir Bena-qantil.
