Le musée de Grenoble, appelé musée de Peinture et de Sculpture de Grenoble jusque dans les années 1980, a été créé le 16 février 1798 par le professeur de dessin Louis-Joseph Jay. Principal musée d'art et d'antiquités de la ville de Grenoble, il est situé place Lavalette, à l'emplacement d'un ancien couvent des Franciscains édifié en 1218 et dont le site deviendra militaire à la fin du XVIe siècle. Il fait partie des premiers musées d'art français par l'ampleur et l'équilibre de ses collections d'art ancien, moderne et contemporain,,.
