Après la Première Guerre mondiale, le ministre français Maginot fit construire des ouvrages de défense de casernes (au total 58 forts) dans le nord et le nord-est. Un exercice futile car aucune considération n'avait été donnée aux avions et aux parachutistes. À Marckolsheim se trouve le Musée Mémorial André Maginot, non loin du Rhin, bien sûr.
