Steenvoorde est situé dans le nord de la France, mais à l’origine un dialecte néerlandais y est parlé. Les jeunes générations parlent presque exclusivement le français. Steenvoorde fut détruite par Charles Quint en 1553. La municipalité est surtout connue parce qu’ici, le 10 août 1566, à la fin d’un pèlerinage de Hondschote au Sint-Laurensklooster à Steenvoorde, l’iconoclasme est apparu.
