Dans son livre 'La Convertie', Stefan Hertmans décrit la position importante de Narbonne : 'Deux grandes routes romaines se rencontraient à Narbonne - la Via Aquitania, qui se dirigeait vers l'ouest, et la Via Domitia, qui se dirigeait vers l'est. La ville se trouvait donc à un carrefour important et a rapidement prospéré. Pendant des siècles, les Arabes l'ont considérée comme leur dernier point d'appui en Gaule. Ils n'étaient pas prêts à abandonner Narbonne. Encore au dixième siècle, le géographe arabe Zuhri écrivait que les chrétiens devaient faire demi-tour s'ils ne voulaient pas être décapités et qu'ils pouvaient se battre jusqu'à la fin des temps, mais qu'ils ne récupéreraient pas cette ville.
