Dieppe est la principale ville française pour la pêche aux coquilles Saint-Jacques. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le 19 août 1942, le raid de Dieppe a eu lieu ici, un débarquement des Alliés qui s'est terminé complètement. On dit que le nom est originaire autour de l'an 1000 lorsque la rivière qui se jetait dans la Manche y était appelée le Deep par les Vikings, en raison de sa profondeur.
