Dieppe is the main French town for scallop fishing. During World War II, on 19 August 1942, the Raid on Dieppe took place here, a landing by the Allies that ended completely. The name is said to have originated around the year 1000 when the river that flowed into the Channel there was called the Deep by the Vikings, because of its depth.
