Sonthonnax-la-Montagne est une commune française, située dans le département de l'Ain en région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Elle se situe à 37,6 kilomètres de Bourg-en-Bresse et 15,4 kilomètres de Nantua.Sonthonnax-la-Montagne se situe au centre-est du département de l'Ain dans le Haut Bugey, dans le massif du Jura. La commune actuelle résulte de la fusion en 1973 dela commune de Sonthonnax-la-Montagne et de la commune la moins peuplée du département à l'époque : Napt. Son territoire est vallonné par les Monts Berthiand. Il est délimité par les communes de Matafelon-Granges, Izernore, Nurieux-Volognat, Leyssard et Bolozon.
