Le toponyme français Plessis est lié aux haies. Pour garder les haies fermées pour les animaux mais aussi pour les humains, les branches des haies étaient tressées (tressage). Le toponyme Plessis vient de l'ancien français plesce, plesse, du latin plexus (plié, courbé). Plessis fait donc référence à une défense faite de branches entrelacées et courbées.
