La Moselle est un département français de la région Grand Est. Il fait historiquement et culturellement partie de la Lorraine. L'Insee et La Poste lui attribuent le code 57.
Ce territoire doit son nom à la rivière de la Moselle, un affluent du Rhin, qui le traverse dans sa partie ouest et arrose Metz, son chef-lieu. Situé en Europe rhénane, il est frontalier avec le Luxembourg et l'Allemagne avec qui il entretient plusieurs liens au sein de la Grande Région. C'est le 23e département le plus peuplé de France en 2017 avec ses 1 043 522 habitants, appelés les Mosellans, qui sont répartis dans 725 communes.
