L'abbaye de Remiremont était une abbaye bénédictine. Elle a été fondée vers 620 par Romaric, un seigneur à la cour de Chlothar II. À une époque ultérieure, les religieuses bénédictines ont été remplacées par un chapitre de 98 chanoinesses qui devaient prouver 200 ans de noblesse. Au XVIIe siècle, les dames de Remiremont se sont tellement éloignées de la règle monastique originale qu'elles ont pris le titre de comtesses, renoncé à leurs vœux et épousé.
