Bugarach est apparu sous les projecteurs du monde entier à la fin de 2012. Le 21 décembre 2012 a été prédit comme l’une des (nombreuses) fois où le monde prendrait fin. Cela a coïncidé avec la fin de la calandere maya, d’où l’hypothèse. L’un des rares endroits qui serait épargné était la région autour de Bugarach, grâce à la montagne particulière du Pic de Bugarach. Les « croyants » pensaient / pensent que cette montagne est un abri pour les extraterrestres et leur vaisseau spatial. Ces extraterrestres sauveraient les gens qui faisaient la queue dans le quartier au moment de l’apocalypse. Rien ne s’est passé lié à l’histoire de la fin du monde. Mais ce qui s’est passé, c’est que cette histoire a créé un énorme coup de pouce pour le tourisme local.
