Le nom de la commune est d'origine bretonne. Son nom, en breton, est Gwelegouarc'h, prononcé ɟeleˈgwaχ. Il associe les termes gwele et Comarc'h. Comarc'h est une évolution du prénom Conmarc'h ou Cynfarch en gallois et signifie « le guerrier à cheval ».Guilligomarc'h est une petite commune rurale appartenant historiquement au Broërec et d'un point de vue administratif à la communauté d'agglomération de Quimperlé Communauté. La commune est située dans le sud-est du département du Finistère et limitrophe de celui du Morbihan.
