La légende du cyclisme René Pottier s’est suicidée en janvier 1907, après que sa petite amie l’ait laissé tomber pour un autre homme. Un an plus tard, un monument lui est érigé sur le Ballon d’Alsace. Il a remporté l’ascension ici deux années de suite. Sa suprématie dans les montagnes était si grande que dans l’étape vers Nice, il est allé tranquillement prendre un verre de vin dans un café et a attendu ses poursuivants, qui avaient déjà une heure de retard. Grâce à ses capacités d’escalade, il a facilement remporté le deuxième Tour, qui avait plus de montées que le précédent.
