Cycling legend René Pottier committed suicide in January 1907, after his girlfriend dropped him for another man. A year later, a monument was erected for him on the Ballon d'Alsace. He won the climb here two years in a row. His supremacy in the mountains was so great that in the stage to Nice he quietly went for a glass of wine in a cafe and waited for his pursuers, who were already an hour behind. Thanks to his climbing abilities, he easily won the second Tour, which had more climbs than the previous one.
