La tour Saint-Nicolas est, avec la tour de la Chaîne et la tour de la Lanterne, l'une des trois tours du front de mer de La Rochelle, et l'une des deux tours emblématiques du Vieux-Port, dont elle constitue la majestueuse porte d'entrée. Elle a assuré pendant cinq siècles la défense de la passe et a servi de point d’attache à la chaîne, tendue depuis l’autre rive, et qui servait à interdire l'accès du port. Elle a été classée au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté du 17 février 1879.
