Un fait curieux à propos de la Carrière Wellington près d'Arras est que pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, cette carrière souterraine a servi d'abri et de point de rassemblement à pas moins de 24 000 soldats alliés, rassemblés secrètement là pour une attaque surprise sur les lignes allemandes le 9 avril 1917. Les tunnels ont été élargis et reliés principalement par des mineurs néo-zélandais ; ils ont même fourni au complexe de l'électricité et de l'eau courante, ce qui était exceptionnel pour l'époque.
