Le château de Bourg-Charente actuel a été construit à partir de 1607 sur le promontoire rocheux qui domine la Charente sur la commune de Bourg-Charente en amont de Cognac pour remplacer une forteresse détruite.
En 1262, la terre de Bourg appartient déjà à la famille Ollivier. En 1363 messire Ollivier, baron de Bourg, rend hommage au prince de Galles, le remariage d'Aliénor d'Aquitaine ayant fait le château de Bourg-Charente possession anglaise.
