L’université de Metz est une ancienne université nationale française, créée en 1971 et située à Metz. Depuis 2005, elle portait le nom de Paul Verlaine, poète né à Metz en 1844 où il vécut plusieurs années. Elle accueille pour l'année 2016-2017 environ 21 038 étudiants et 1 300 stagiaires en formation continue.
Au 1er janvier 2012, les universités de Metz, Nancy-I et II et l’Institut national polytechnique de Lorraine fusionnent pour créer l’université de Lorraine, mettant de facto fin à chacun de ces quatre établissements.
