L'Allier est une rivière qui coule au centre de la France ; c'est l'un des principaux affluents de la Loire. La rivière et sa vallée forment un axe majeur autour duquel s'est constituée l'ancienne province d'Auvergne. Elle donne son nom au département français de l'Allier.
À l'époque de Jules César, au Ier siècle av. J.-C., la rivière portait le nom d'Elaver en latin mais probablement également en gaulois précédemment. Au Ve siècle le nom se transforme en Elaris puis Elarius au IXe siècle. Ce nom se compose de la base hydronymique El- et du suffixe -av-er.
