La principauté épiscopale de Metz est un état du Saint-Empire romain germanique et arrive en 1648 par les traités de Westphalie sous souveraineté française.
La principauté appartient au cercle du Haut-Rhin et inclut au Moyen Âge des biens séculaires considérables, qui se dispersent initialement de Chiemsee aux Cévennes. À l'époque moderne, il comprend encore un territoire étroit autour de Vic-sur-Seille, dans le nord-est de la Lorraine .
