Le comté de Sarrewerden ou de Nassau-Saarwerden fut terre d'Empire jusqu'à son rattachement à la France en 1793, dans les départements de la Moselle et de la Meurthe, puis finalement dans celui du Bas-Rhin.
Au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, Augustin Calmet donne le descriptif suivant : « Le Comté de Sarwerden est un petit Etat situé sur la Sâre, dans la Lorraine Allemande, entre la Seigneurie de Fenêtrange & le Comté de Bitche ».
