La plus grande partie de la flotte française a été sabordée à Toulon le 27 novembre 1942 sur l'ordre de l'Amirauté, en réaction à l’opération Lila consistant à la capture de la flotte du régime de Vichy par le Troisième Reich. Près de 90 % de la flotte française stationnée dans la base navale de Toulon est détruite ; quelques rares unités appareillèrent, échappant tant au sabordage qu'à la capture par les forces de l'Axe.
