Début du XIIIème siècle, les Cordeliers bâtirent un couvent à l'ouest de la ville dont il subsiste l'église, rattachée à l'hôpital de Beaulieu, deux corps de bâtiments et quelques traces du cloitre.
Dans la nef, se trouve le tombeau de l'écrivain Jean-Louis Guez-de-Balzac né à Angoulême (1597-1654).
